A 17-year-old boy from Thakazhi in Alappuzha district of Kerala died of suspected rabies on Friday (May 9, 2025).

The deceased has been identified as Sooraj. He died while undergoing treatment at Government Medical College Hospital, Alappuzha.

The boy was reportedly attacked by a dog around two weeks ago. According to the preliminary information, he did not take the anti-rabies vaccine.

A few days ago, he developed a fever and was taken to the hospital where doctors confirmed a rabies infection. His condition worsened and died on Friday morning.

Officials said his friends and relatives would be vaccinated against rabies as a precautionary measure. “The exact cause of the death will be revealed after the post-mortem examination,” said an official.

Recently, a seven-year-old girl from Kollam succumbed to rabies despite receiving anti-rabies vaccination.
