Murshidabad violence: BJP Trinamool spar over fact finding report

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday targeted the Trinamool Congress over a report of a fact finding committee submitted to the Calcutta High Court which quoted victims saying that Trinamool Congress leaders were present at the site of violence.

Not only BJP leaders from West Bengal but BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi held a press conference in Delhi and said that violence at “Murshidabad was targeted towards Hindus”.

“According to some media reports, the SIT report on Murshidabad violence has clearly and unambiguously indicated that violence was carried out by targeting Hindus and TMC leaders were involved in it and the attitude of the police, instead of stopping the violence, seems to be ignoring the actions of TMC leaders,” Mr. Trivedi said at the press conference.

The report by the three member committee had highlighted the presence of local Trinamool Congress leaders including local councillor and MLA at the site of violence. The report which was submitted before the division bench of Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Raja Basu Chowdhury also added that the West Bengal Police did not respond to calls by the locals.

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari also highlighted that the report and said police did not receive calls from helpless villagers. “I have time and again said that Hindus have to unite,” he added. Another BJP leader Dilip Ghosh said that instead of visiting Jammu and Kashmir, the Trinamool Congress leaders should visit Murshidabad. The West Bengal’s ruling party has sent a delegation of Trinnamool leaders to Jammu and Kashmir.

Communal violence had erupted on April 11 and April 12 in Samserganj and Dhulian areas of Murshidabad over protests over the Waqt (Amendment) Act. The violence claimed three lives and hundreds were left homeless. Since the violence the West Bengal police has registered multiple FIRs and over 300 people have been arrested.

Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh said that the State government and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee have fulfilled all their responsibility after the riots.

“BJP’s political propaganda on the Murshidabad incident is provocative and politically-motivated. What happened in Murshidabad is condemnable, nobody supports it. Following the unrest, Hon’ble CM, state administration, and police have fulfilled all their duties,” Mr. Ghosh said. The Trinamool leader said that the State government has provided compensation and rehabilitation.

“There have been arrests and investigations are going into the matter. Another aspect involves the larger conspiracy. How did outsiders, possibly including those from across the border, enter [the state]? Probe into the same is underway,” the Trinamool leader said. Mr. Ghosh said that at a time when the country is united in its fight against terror, BJP leaders are busy with propaganda on Murshidabad.
