Parts of Kodagu and other regions of south interior Karnataka, including Mysuru, have been experiencing heavy rains since the last 24 hours signalling the early onset of monsoon.
Kodagu district has received 74.04 mm of rainfall during the 24 hour period ending 8.30 a.m. on Sunday (May 25, 2025). Bhagamandala, the birthplace of river Cauvery, was battered by 168.2 mm of rainfall during the period while it received 102 mm during the previous 24-hour period.
Other places with high rainfall include, Kedmulluru (139.5 mm), Kadanuru (117 mm) Chembebelluru (109.5 mm), Hosuru (104.5 mm), all in Virajpet; Gonikkopal (97 mm) in Ponnampet. In Madikeri taluk, Kasaba received 90.5 mm while Napoklu received 72 mm of rainfall during the 24 hour period ending 8.30 a.m. on Sunday. Shanthalli recorded 100 mm while Hudikeri received 125.7 mm of rainfall during the same period.
According to Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), Gonikkopal received 133.5 mm of rainfall between 8.30 a.m. and 4.15 p.m. on Sunday. Kedmulluru received 118.5 mm, Thithimathi recorded 116 mm of rainfall and Kadanuru received 101 mm of rainfall. In the neighbouring district of Mysuru, Malangi recorded 115.5 mm of rainfall on Sunday.
Electricity poles damaged
The initial spell of heavy rains has wreaked havoc in Kodagu where 197 electricity poles have been damaged. The Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) has deployed 15 teams who are working round-the-clock to replace damaged poles and restore power supply in the affected areas.
Electricity poles and trees were found to have crashed and blocked roads disrupting normal traffic, in different parts of Kodagu. A giant tree which was uprooted due to gale, had blocked the Siddapura-Kushalnagar road at Valnoor village. The Kushlanagar-Somwarpet main road was also blocked by electricity poles that were uprooted by the heavy rain and gusty winds.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rains with sustained winds in Kodagu, Mysuru, Mandya, Chamarajanagar and Hassan and is valid till Monday (May 26, 2025).
