The Regional Meteorological Centre here on Wednesday issued a red alert for ghat areas of Coimbatore and Nilgiris district for May 29 and 30 (Thursday and Friday). Heavy to very heavy rain at a few places with extremely heavy rain at one or two places is likely to occur over these places.

Similarly, for Thursday and Friday, it has predicted the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places over Theni, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts. Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Dindigul and Tiruppur during the same period.

Meanwhile, Tuesday’s low pressure area over Northwest Bay of Bengal off the Odisha coast became a well marked low pressure area over the same region at 5.30 a.m. on Wednesday and persists over the region with the associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level tilting southwards with height. It is likely to move slowly northwards and concentrate into a depression over North Bay of Bengal during next 24 hours.
