A 21-year-old man was arrested on Friday by Sholinghur police for killing a Class X student, J. Janani (15), in her house at Pulivalam village near Sholinghur town in Ranipet. Her cousin was seriously injured in the attack on Wednesday.
Police said the arrested person was identified as K. Subramani (21), a native of K.G. Kandigai village in Tiruvallur district. Initial inquiry revealed that Subramani was in love with Janani, but she had rejected his proposal.
Along with her mother J. Priyanka, Janani used to visit her grandparents’ house in K.G. Kandigai village. That is where Subramani had got acquainted with the girl.
On Wednesday evening, she had been playing with cousins in their grandmother’s house,when the youth barged in and locked the door from inside.
Cousin injured
He attacked the girls and stabbed Janani to death. Her cousin B. Lakshaya (16), a class XI student, was gravely injured in the assault.
Hearing the commotion, neighbours and relatives broke the door down and caught Subramani. They informed Sholingur police and shifted the injured girls to the Government Taluk Hospital in Sholinghur.
Doctors at the hospital declared Janani dead on arrival. Lakshaya was referred to the Government Medical College Hospital in Vellore.
