DMDK general secretary Premallatha Vijayakant on Sunday remained non-committal about the party continuing its alliance with AIADMK despite the latter announcing that they are allotting a Rajya Sabha seat in 2026 and that the alliance between AIADMK and DMDK would continue.
Speaking to the reporters, Ms. Premallatha said that the announcement should be seen in relation to the upcoming assembly elections in 2026 and DMDK will also make its position clear appropriately in 2026. “You should ask those who made the announcement that the alliance would continue. During 2024 Lok Sabha elections, it was given in writing to us that we would be given a Rajya Sabha seat and 5 Lok Sabha MP seats but without mentioning the year in which it will be allotted,” she recalled.
“When I urged Mr. Edappadi Palaniswami that they should mention the year, he said that it is not a norm to mention the year but assured us it would be given. They have now announced that it would be allotted in 2026 and they have done their duty. So, DMDK considers it as a part of election manoeuver and we will also announce our decision regarding the alliance at a public rally on January 9, 2026 in Cuddalore district,” she said.
She further added, “In the next few days, we will announce office bearers in all 234 constituencies. DMDK will also move towards elections.”
AIADMK, DMDK, Puthiya Tamilagam and Social Democratic Party of India contested 2024 Lok Sabha alliance together and polled around 23% of the votes.
