Floki shifts from meme coin origins with full release of its new play-to-earn MMORPG built around NFTs and player rewards
Floki, originally known for its presence in the meme coin space, has launched the mainnet version of Valhalla, its long-in-development blockchain-based multiplayer game. The game, which went live on June 30, introduces a Norse mythology setting and includes a play-to-earn structure tied to the FLOKI token.
The release follows more than three years of development and marks a transition for Floki from a cryptocurrency project into a gaming platform. Hafthor Bjornsson, best known for portraying The Mountain in Game of Thrones, previewed Valhalla to his followers in advance of its launch, offering early access via his Twitch channel.
Valhalla allows players to explore an open world, capture and train NFT-based creatures known as Veras, and engage in turn-based tactical combat within hexagonal arenas. Rewards in FLOKI tokens are available through gameplay, including PvP tournaments supported by a multi-million-dollar token pool. Players can earn by winning battles or through marketplace activity such as farming and selling resources.
Pedro Vidal, Community Relations Officer at Floki, said the game aims to address long-standing complaints within blockchain gaming by building something “gamers actually want to play.”
The launch is backed by a partnership with esports organisation Method, which will promote Valhalla through its platform. Method’s branding will also feature Valhalla across its official jerseys during 2025 and 2026, expanding the game’s visibility among MMO audiences.
Floki’s move reflects a broader trend within the blockchain gaming industry, which is estimated to have reached a market value of $7.1 billion in 2024. Daily usage across blockchain games has surpassed 2 million unique active wallets, with new titles and blockchain integrations now being explored by traditional gaming companies such as Ubisoft and Zynga.
Valhalla is currently live and accessible via web browser. Its developers say further updates, partnerships, and in-game features are planned following the launch. Players can learn more or start playing at valhalla.game.
