A wild elephant trampled a farmer to death near Baikere in Sakleshpur taluk, Hassan district in Karnataka, on April 25. Shanmukha, 36, son of coffee planter Amruthesh, encountered the elephant while working on his farm.

The incident has left residents of nearby villages in shock.

Earlier this year, four people died in similar incidents in Hassan district. The local people held a series of protests demanding the capture and relocation of all wild elephants in the district.

The Forest Department conducted an operation to capture wild elephants in March.

The department captured three elephants. Of them, two were shifted to elephant camps while one was translocated with a radio collar. Besides that, officials fixed radio-collars on two more tuskers.
